Review | Spyro Reunited Trilogy

"The Dragon is back! Or is it? Yeah, it is, and it is as good as it was before. We all miss those good platform games and Spyro is here to fix that."

Spyro Reunited Trilogy is a collection of remasters of the first three games in the Spyro series: Spyro the Dragon (1998) , Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999) and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000). We all know who Spyro is and what is his homework. Demand was high, choice was only logical and here we are with all 3 Spyro games.

Spyro and Sparx. One does not go without the other.

Initiate nostalgic cannons. Launch.

And that's it. Remake of Spyro. What's not to like? In the time when PS1 was killing it with titles, Spyro was one of the faces for Sony. We all knew who he was, we all played Spyro games. Crash and Spyro were basically icons at the time. Both games are arcade platform style games and barely any new title got this more right. And know this - everything that was good at the time in the past, stayed that way.

Free some Dragons. Some of them have funny things to say.

Your homework is to free all the dragons that are turned to stone while exploring the realm. On your journey you will collect gems, dragons, eggs and even some new cool skills.

First of the three games is the most basic platformer. I like it the best. Game will turn you into real collector , aiming to 100% all levels. Although it's really easy game, some missions have really good hidden areas. You will have to stop and think how to reach them.

Second in the series will introduce some skills and you will have to go back and forth if you want to 100% levels. That was a bit tedious and not as fluent as first one. Enemies in second Sypro don't drop gems as in first and third, instead their kills count and when you kill enough you can for example use flying portal in the level.

Third is better then second. All the skills from the beginning, but in here they introduced allies. Apart from Sypro you will control few other characters and beat their levels. Even Sparx will be playable. Backtracking is still present, but overall the game is fun.

Spyro is popular throughout whole realm.

Levels are eye candy. When you compare to PS1 graphics it looks really really nice and I'm glad that this game got this much attention. Like watching, rather say playing your favorite cartoon. There is no doubt that all generations of kids will simply love Spyro, and we, older generations, well, we also care.

So we have same levels but with this gen graphics make up, we have game that is fun. They just don't make them as this anymore. It's a real shame, after playing 200h something serious this is just the doze of what you need to relax. Each level will require something different to finish it. But main goal is to free the dragons. Very often when you wake them up they will give some comments. Some are even funny.

Look at me, collecting monkeys in barrel. Life is good.

Good thing is that they did not worsen the controls. Running is a bit awkward and it will take some time to get use to it. Camera will often not follow as it should when running mode is on, so often you will find yourself falling towards oblivion. Scorching enemies on the other hand is always fun.  If you remember that annoying guys with eggs that you need to run over, yep they are back and they are fast as hell. That will be most challenging thing until you master running.

Another challenge can be flying levels, where you have 4 sets of challenges that you need to collect or simply fly through etc. Still, it's cool. You need to explore a bit and see what you need to collect first, combine and finish all in one go.

Boss battles are easy. At the end of every world you will face a boss, beat it with your eyes closed and move to they next world.

Fly Spyro, we have cookies.

The Storytelling is not much. At the time it was simply simple. You are the cool small cute dragon. End of story. Only Spyro 3 has some deeper story and longer cutscenes. I guess for kids it will do.

Tom Kenny, who voiced Spyro the Dragon in the original Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon, reprised his role in Spyro Reignited Trilogy with re-recorded voice lines, including the first game, in which Spyro was originally voiced by Carlos Alazraqui. Stewart Copeland the music composer of the three original games wrote a new main theme for the compilation. His original compositions for the games were remastered by Stephan Vankov an employee of Toys for Bob, with the game including an option to choose between the two soundtracks.

Music is decent, nothing spectacular, it fits the game.

Balloon is the main in between worlds transport. But if i was dragon i would fly on my own.

If you ever feel stuck, you can quickly check your progress or just teleport where you want. There are also some Skill points which unlocks some additional artwork but mostly there are not worth the hassle. What game offers for 100% is just enough to enjoy yourself.

Time to return Home. Every day ends.

It is so cool that after 20 years we can still play the game and enjoy. That just means they were doing good job back then.

This is a proof that games are art and some will last very long. It is a great remake of a good games. Don't expect masterpiece, but what game gives, game delivers, and there is not much games that can be better choice for your kids than this one.

"Although very basic and easy, platformer elements are here. It was a great game even back then, and it still is."
