2024 was a fantastic year for RPGs! It's always exciting to see the genre thrive, especially with turn-based RPGs making such a big impact. If I had to choose a personal Game of the Year (GOTY), I’d go with Metaphor. That said, I still need to finish Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake, Baldur's Gate 3, and a few Trails games... I’m way behind, so I really need to wrap these up and get back to playing!
My year kicked off with countless hours in Monster Hunter Rise. And when it comes to MH games, every hour is well-spent. I absolutely love these games, and I can't wait for Wilds. I still need to finish a few monster hunts in Rise to unlock the Platinum trophy.
The biggest disappointment for me was Granblue Fantasy: Relink. After so much time spent developing it, the story felt too short, and the endless grind didn’t add much value other than repeating boss fights on higher difficulties. It was an okay game, but not much more than that. The same goes for FF: Rebirth. While I enjoyed some aspects of the game, the story changes, the bloated open-world activities, and the mini-games really took away from the experience. It was also in a rough technical state, which only added to my frustrations. As a huge fan of the original, I was let down. Eiyuden Chronicle also ended up being disappointing—such a shame, since I love Suikoden.
On a brighter note, Persona 3 was great, Metaphor is my GOTY, and the SMT: V port is the definitive version of an already fantastic game. Trails to Azure was a nostalgic treat, and Romancing SaGa 2 was my first SaGa game, which I really enjoyed. Fantasian turned out to be one of the best titles of the year. Visions of Mana didn’t quite impress me, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 was a big disappointment, though still somewhat addictive.
It’s unfortunate that Stellar Blade didn’t receive any recognition at the Game Awards—it was definitely one of the best games of 2024.
The Best Remake for me was Silent Hill 2 (loved it!), though RE4 was also fantastic. The Best DLC, hands down, goes to Elden Ring. Wo Long—a new Nioh-like game—wasn’t great, but Black Myth: Wukong was a standout. It wasn’t my GOTY, but it was a fun experience. I’m excited to see what more we get from Korean and Chinese developers—they’ve been delivering great games so far.
Astro Bot won the GOTY award, but I wouldn’t have chosen it for the top spot, even though it was an amazing game. I also really enjoyed Hi-Fi Rush—it was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year (at least the ones I played this year).
Overall, it was a great year for gaming, and I had tons of fun. I’m looking forward to what next year has in store, and I’m sure it’ll be just as exciting. Enjoy the holidays, play some great games, and I’ll see you next year!
