Are you ready for one of the best turn-based adventures? Dive deep and prepare for the upcoming port of the original SMT V, and do not sleep on it! It's something you really need to play.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is due to go out for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows, Xbox One, Series X/S on June 14th, 2024. That is tomorrow! Wow, thats close for sure. It comes with a 59.99$ price tag - which is not a lot for a game of this quality.

I was one of the lucky few that got their hands on the original version that was exclusive for Nintendo, so if you want, check it out:

This article will try and shortly explain what do we get with this version of the game and how to tackle of of that. Let's start!

Save transfer

Unfortunately, there is no way to transfer your save file from the original version, even on Switch. You can only get 3 demons in that version and trasfer them, but that is it.

New endings and routes

Vengeance allows the players to experience the original story of Shin Megami Tensei V in the "Canon of Creation" route. That was the route in the original version of the. To follow that one, when you start a new game you’ll get a choice to take the girl’s hand or to not take her hand. If you choose to not take her hand, you’ll be on this story path

If you want a second route, "Canon of Vengeance" (which is new for this version of the game with drastic changes in the latter half of the game), when you start a new game you’ll get a choice to take the girl’s hand or to not take her hand. If you choose to take her hand, you’ll be on this story path.

Both paths are 80h long if you aim to do everything, but of course you can transfer your progress to NG+ and just speed up the process if you want so. I advise you to go for the first playthrough blind and simply enjoy the game.

Improvements

Quality of life (QOL) features:

  • Level cap of the Nahobino and demons goes from 99 to 150 under certain conditions.
  • The speed at which players can distribute new demon skill has been changed, and now offers four alternatives: standard, double speed, max speed, or skip.
  • A new item is introduced that will allow players to reset the Nahobino’s parameters and relocate his stats.
  • Players can toggle minimap rotation ON or OFF in the settings menu.
  • Saving can now be done anywhere in the map.
  • Growth items such as Gospels that increase EXP and Incenses for stats increase can now be used in a batch.
  • Some Miracles can be toggled ON or OFF from the status screen.
  • There are no new difficulty levels, so the original three are still casual, normal, and hard.
  • Virtual trainer mode has been added to let you fight previously encountered bosses.
  • Voice-over options are offered in English and Japanese, and the English dub is quite decent.

This version also adds new locations, some gameplay mechanics, and over 40 additional demons (with news being the introduction of unique demon slots that differs from the classic demon abilities), including some specifically created for Vengeance by artist Masayuki Doi. Players will be able to interact with demons in their party.

The downloadable content from the original release is included with the base game (which is gread, additional content was really good), but Vengeance will launch with its own additional DLC quests, featuring Dagda from Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse and a new demon Konohana Sakuy. We are in for a treat!

List of included DLCs:

  • The Return of the True Demon
  • The Doctor’s Last Wish
  • The Rage of a Queen
  • A Goddess in Training DLCs

List of paid DLCs:

  • The Mitama DLC, and two new demons will be added as paid DLC

Graphical and Frame Rate Improvements

Vengeance will run flawlessly on the PlayStation 5 at smooth 60 fps with around 6-second load times. You need 26.31 GB on your disk, which isn’t too large. There are some graphical upscaling, but not by much. This game is not about the graphics, it's about the awesome gameplay, but don't worry, it will look good.

There are options to toggle subtitles, anti-aliasing, motion blur, and ambient occlusion.

Do not miss out on SMT V! It's one of the best turn-based games out there. They even tried to improve the story part of the game - so I expect that this version will be even better than the original.
