Star Ocean: The Second Story R - Fishing

You will unlock fishing after you need to go to Krosse Cave for story events (after you get/reject Celine). Learn Fishing by leveling up Biology and Item Knowledge Specialties (level them up or change the IC category by pressing square and level up Fishing directly).

Now enter IC/Specialty under your inventory, find Fishing, enter, and turn it ON. If you apprach the fishing spot (water, ponds, wells etc.) there will be a fishing icon. If you press R1 you can change the bait (you can use whatever you catch to easily catch bigger fish for example), or you can leave your fishing rod without a bait to have a harder time catching bigger fish (but still doable with multiple attempts). 

Fishing is easy - throw the bait and when you see exclamations marks press X. If you pull the rod before you catch a fish, you will not lose a bait. If the fish escapes after you see the exclamations marks, your bait will be gone.

Easy, early money farming

You can do this as soon as you exit the Kross City and unlock fishing. Make your way towards Harley (eastern part of the Kross, east from the Kross City). Enter the town and go to the item shop, buy some Shrimp. We will be catching Harley Marlins, which sell for more than 3k Fol per a piece. Considering you can catch around 3-4 per a minute, you will be earning around 10k Fol per a minute. 

The method is simple - exit Harley and check the spot nearby. There are some fish shadows so it's hard to miss the spot. Press R1 and choose Shrimp as a bait. Throw the rod and keep retracting it until the screen gets darker. This will 100% grant you 1 Harley Marlin per a catch (if you don't miss when pulling). If you level up your fishing more, you can catch more than 1 piece of this fish per catch. This is a pretty easy and good method for most of the game actually, if you plan on buying stuff as you play.

How to get the Masterwork Rod

Catch 15 types of fish and talk with Reel in Harley. He will reward you with this rod, which you can use to catch the biggest and rarest fish in the game. The rest stays the same - bigger fish bait is used to catch bigger fish easier, but you can see all of that by pressing R1 when the fishing icon prompt is present.

All fishing locations and all fish

When you find a fishing spot wait for a few seconds and you will see a name of the location and list of fish. If you press R1 you can see which bait to use for which fish. Rare fish usually appears when you throw a bait and the screen gets darker with a sound of the rare opportunity. The rarest/bigest fish will be captured if your screen gets darks and flickers. This means that you can choose a bait, keep throwing and pulling out to save bait until you hear the sound and the screen changes. It makes catching rare fish easy.
