News | Wanna play, might play - The whole 2022th?

by Foggy, 22-06-2022 , edited by Foggy, 30-12-2022

I've missed a lot of months from the last Wanna play article, but here is something on a global 2022th scale that will give you some insight what to expect in this year, when, and why.

Let's start this article by naming some games that are already out there. It's sort of like my mini-backlog of some interesting titles out there. The year 2022th is not the best one when it comes to gaming, but there are some hot games coming out througout the year that will for sure be something else. As a huge JRPG and anime fan I will focus on titles of that genre and well, mostly what interests me till the end of the year. I will also update this article when something gets a date or they announce additional platforms for some games from the list below.

I hope you will enjoy!

What I've missed - probably I will play

Rise of the Third Power

Release date: 10.2.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

I can't say I'm a huge fan of RPG-maker kind of RPG's, but this one seems interesting. It's from the creators of Ara Fell - another similar title that is meant to awake our nostalgia for old-school RPG's. Well, I will at least try this one and see what it is about (in such a shortage of turn-based RPG, what more can a man do...).

Nobody Saves the World

Release date: 14.4.2022 on PlayStation 5, PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

A cute top-down action RPG that seems fun. Since I'm currently waiting for a few games, this might be something I will explore. I don't know what to expect, so thats always good, right? (well, the grades are not bad, so at least I know that part).

Edit 23.6.2022:
Well, yesterday I tried this title. Well, It's good, a lot! It's so addictive and fun, so I would suggest this game to everyone who is up for top down action RPG's with "jobs" (you transform into variety of personas and each has its own skills, attacks, terrain skills...). As you progress your personas, you unlock previously blocked areas and dungeons, and it feels like a lightweight RPG when it comes to leveling. There is a base level shared across all personas, and personas level which folows the quests (tasks) that each persona needs to do in order to gain a level and unlock connected personas.

Boy, this game is so cool! The platinum is also not bad, maybe I will do a guide, but let's see when I finish the game and do the review. I strongly recommend.

Upcoming titles in 2022th

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

Release date: 24.6.2022 on Nintendo Switch

Up until now I thought this is going to be another FE classic strategy game. Nope. This one is a Dynasty Warriors "clone" in FE universe featuring FE characters. Probably I will skip this one, but as a fan of the series I will at least mention the game. Maybe it will shine? Who knows.

Cuphead in the Delicious Last Course

Release date: 30.6.2022 on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4

Finally. After so many years from the original release on Xbox, across the port to PS consoles - we will now get the DLC for the game. I can't wait, Cupheads are among my favorite platforming titles on consoles, so this one is my must-wanna-play title of June. Well, not much is going on in this month anyway, so this is hot stuff for me.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

Release date: 8.7.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

This one is pure nostalgia trip.  Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series brings back "Klonoa: Door to Phantomile" and "Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil" remastered in one collection, games released initially in 1997 by Namco. It seems fun, like the games were at the time.

Live A Live

Release date: 22.7.2022 on Nintedo Switch

A remake, a remaster? Live A Live is a 1994 role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the Super Famicom. A remake for Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release worldwide on July 22, 2022, published by Square Enix in Japan and Nintendo in the West. As a huge fan of fixel anime art, I really look forward to this title. It's going to be tight considering Xenoblade Chronicles 3 comes out one week after.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Release date: 30.7.2022 on Nintedo Switch

What can I even say about the series I love and adore? JRPG lover inside me just crave for more Xenobalde games. Too bad it's only on Switch, I really can't image how beautiful this game would look on stronger systems (not that I care, but locations on the previous games were incredible), but nevertheless, Xenoblade 3 is my favorite upconing title in this year. Stay tuned for more news after today's Nintedo Direct.

Sword and Fairy: Together Forever

Release date: 4.8.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5

7th title in the series, wow! I had no idea about the first 6, similar to Xuan-Yuan Sword VII which I've play and kind of liked:

This one is an action-based RPG, looks cool enough and for sure I will try it. Hopefully this title can shed more light onto the serioes which finally arives in West.

Thymesia

Release date: 18.8.2022 on Xbox Series X, PC, PlayStation 5

DMC, Souls-like, Nioh-like... Too many influences. But, I'm just a sucker for games of this kind, so Thymesia could shine bright with its cool weapon system and dark settings. Let's see how this one turns out, which is quite soon.

Update:

Thymesia has been postponed, so the new release date is 18th August, which is not a big delay. Let's hope they manage to polish the game in time.

Soul Hackers 2

Release date: 25.8.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One

Whatever Atlus does, I follow. It's simple as that. After Persona 5 and SMT V all I want is more Atlus JRPG's. Soul Hackers is for me a title that I will for sure play and probably do a guide for. Can't wait.

The Lord of the Rings - Gollum (Postponed)

Release date: 1.9.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One Postponed!

No idea what to expect from this one. As a fan of LOTR, I will at least try it out. It's not a hot title on my list, but something I will chase with new informations, maybe something hooks me up.

Update:

The game has been postponed, so we have no idea will and when is the new date. Last trailer looked quite bad, so this can only be a good thing for us.

The Last of Us Part I - Remake

Release date: 2.9.2022 on PlayStation 5

I liked the first game, just maybe not as much as some fans out there. The second title was also great, but I'm not sure that full price for the old title is fair for the gamers out there, especially the ones which bought the game more than once. I can't say much here other than that I will probably play it (but not for the full price for sure). I'm not hyped a lot, and I'm not sure that this is what we need (I would prefer a new game from Naughty Dog studios).

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness

Release date: 2.9.2022 on PlayStation 4, PC, Switch

First of all, I need to start reading manga more. Made in Abyss is the anime series by Akihito Tsukushi, and it's getting its first ever video game adaptation (it just looks like a cute, anime treat!). Will this be worthy of our time? Who knows, but in September we will have all the answers.

Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten

Release date: 8.9.2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 (Only for Japan on PS4 and PS5 and PC (Worldwide)

I'm really, really sad that this will not be in West on Playstation consoles. It just looks interesting and something I like playing. JRPG, turn-based, anime-styled? Well, I might play it on PC instead, it's where you can play it outside of the Japan. Or, we just move to Japan and never ever experience this kind of trouble anymore.

If you seek more details, newer video was recently released and you can check it below.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero

Release date: 27.9.2022 on PlayStation 4

Oh boy, how I crave for Trails games. They take so long to get localized, it's a bit frustrating that we have to wait for 2 or more years for some titles in the series, especially when they all contribute to overal story of Cold Steel and Sky series (Sky series being the best for me personally). I was waiting for Playstation release, and finally, it's going to happen. Turn-based beauty with great story-telling, just the way I like them.

Valkyrie Elysium

Release date: 29.9.2022 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and 11.11.2022 on PC (Steam)

After a few great titles, comes the new Valkyrie which will be action-based and a 3D game. Is that good? For me, not so much. It looks a bit dissapointing at first, considering they plan to change the whole gameplay mechanics that the previous titles used. I might skip this one if they don't bring something better to the table, but it's on the radar.

We got the release date recently - Valkyrie Elysium is out this year.

Star Ocan: The Divine Force

Release date: 27.10.2022 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam

So, Star Ocean 1 and 2 - JRPG gems. Third one? Still solid. Forth? Review:

In short, good, not solid. 5th title? I couldn't even play it. This looks, I don't know, a bit dull? I guess that's what I feel about it currently. I also don't like the open-world exploration, but hey, I'm left to be suprised yet. Maybe something will change, as a fan of the series I will give it some more chances.

After watching the newest trailer which explains the story, the world and the characters, SO The Divne Force looks much better. I'm still a bit afraid of the scale of the game, considering the team behind is not the biggest one and they plan to offer us some kind of open-world dungeons. I just hope that we don't get another generic JRPG that will easily be forgotten.

Resident Evil Village: Winters' Expansion

Release date: 28.10.2022 on Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

The first DLC for latest RE entry (which I loved) is out this winter. With it comes the third-person view also for the base game, which is somethig that will bring more fans for sure. I consider replaying the base game in third-person, and then doing the DLC, I really liked the game.

Harvestella

Release date: 4.11.2022 on Nintedo Switch, PC (Steam)

A life simulation RPG that looks like them old Square JRPG's was recently accounced and I must admit - I'm quite interested. It looks like a fantasy Harvest Moon with beautiful artwork. I will for sure monitor how will this advance.

God of War Ragnarok

Release date: 9.11.2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5

Are you ready for new God of War? Previous title was one of the best titles of the last generation, so I expect nothing less from its direct sequel. Finally the release date was confirmed and it's now certain that we play new adventure with Kratos and his boy this year. Can't wait.

The Callisto Protocol

Release date: 2.12.2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One

The working title was probably Dead Space 4, but they had to change it considering this is not EA anymore. That being sad, The Calisto Protocol is a upcoming title from the creators of Dead Space series and it looks like, Dead Space! More limb dismembering, fear in the space and beaufitul, disguisting creatures that will hunt us in nightmares is here at the end of year. Let's hope it will bring something new and fresh to the table, we had 3 games with the same setting - so, give us something new here.

Titles announced for Q3, 2022

Alterium Shift (Demo)

Release date: Q3 2022 for a PC Demo, out on Consoles and PC without a release date yet

You get the pattern now? Retro-pixelised JRPGs are my thing, but I do skip a lot of them if I don't "feel" something. This looks like modern Chrono Trigger, with the similar fight mechanics. I look forward to checking this one out.

Titles announced for Q4, 2022

Chained Echoes

Release date: Q4 2022 on Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC without a release date yet

Hehe, one more 16-bit SNES JRPG! It looks a bit less interesting than the above title, but still, I want to check it out. We don't have the release date yet, but let's hope it will happen during this year.

Soulstice

Release date: Q4 2022 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam without a release date yet

Another sword-wielding action-oriented game that looks like DMC-ish. Looks kind of interesting, so I will closely monitor when this comes out, or I will skip it if I don't see more that I like.

Titles announced for Winter 2022

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion

Release date: Winter 2022 on PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC without a release date yet

I'm so mad and excited at the same time. Excited because they announce this as a remake (remaster?) of the original PSP title Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. It's one of my favorite stories ever, told from the Zacks perspective, which gave more insight on the overal FFVII story. Zack is my favorite game hero, and I will love spending more time with him again. Why I'm mad? I can see some animations from the recent Square event (25th FFVII Aniversary) that were not part of the original story. Nomura is trying to tell something different using his timeline formula that I dislike, strongly. If they don't change the original spin-off, the game will shine. I just hope the combat will be better (I hated the slots for summons) and the locations will be more interesting. The game was great, but it had its downs for sure. If they manage to fix that, leave the story, show us modern graphics with the music that I still listen to - this game will surpass the Remake Part 1. I don't want any changes, that's my only problem.

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered

Release date: Winter 2022 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, PC (Steam), iOS, and Android without a release date yet

SaGa is a long running series that received couple of ports and remasters in past years. Another title I look forward to is this one, so, come to us sweet SaGa!

Titles announced for 2022

One Piece Odyssey

Release date: Winter 2022 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and PC without a release date yet

I've never, ever watched the anime TV show. Maybe I should? I know one thing for sure - this DQ kind of eye-candy is going in my PS5 when it comes out. It's a turn-based JRPG title that is of course connected with the manga, but being all that I love is something that shifted me towards wanting to play this. Check out the trailer.

If you seek interest in more details, recently dev diary video was released, check it out below.

Sea of Stars

Release date: 2023 on PC, Switch without a release date yet

Another JRPG title inspired by the famous Chrono Trigger. If you want more info, I have just the thing for your (that being said, I really look forward to this game):

Guys, bring this to other consoles please. Unfortunately, the game was delayed to 2023, but I will still leave it here in the topic.

Titles announced for 2022, but only in Japan or without a release date

Codename: Wandering Sword

Release date: Nobody Knows yet, coming to PC (Steam)

I just had to! It looks a lot like Octopath Traveler, and I just like that sytle. It's a Wuxia-style pixel RPG. Let's hope it will reach West soon, and that we get some dates.

Trinity Trigger

Release date: 15.9.2022. in Japan, coming to PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch (for west, we don't know yet)

Mana-styled action RPG with anime graphics comes in September in Japan. It looks cool, so let's hope it will also come West, so we can all play it.

Lost Soul Aside

Release date: Unknown release date, coming out on Playstation 5, PC

This looks as if DMC and Final Fantasy XV had a child. Is that a good thing? No if I look at FFXV for sure! (I'm not a fan). Looks promising, but you never know with indie project such as this one (Edge of Eternity was not good).
