Getting Fishing Rods

Before you start fishing, make sure to purchase all of the fishing rod upgrades from the Virtue Exchange, which are under the "Fishing" category. After you purchase the first 4 rods, your can then purchase Peerless Pole Expertise, which is the best rod for both Sea and River fishing. It costs a total of 7800 Virtue for all of the Rod upgrades, which is not very much compared to other entries. This guide will be written for catching the fish with Peerless Pole Expertise.

Bait

Bait is your friend. When you want some fish to appear, you toss some bait. Otherwise you will spend some extra time getting the fish you want. You can purchase Quality Bait at Ichikura General Goods in Fushimi, and that one is more than enough to catch every type of fish.

Fish categories and how to catch fish

Some fish are easily distinguished by the shape in the water. There are 4 types of fish you can encounter:

  • Regular
  • Triangle-shapped
  • Long
  • Blob-like

To catch fish, simply toss your rod next to a fish, or in the way where fish swim, and wait for it to turn red. When your red part of the hook is under water, press the X button to catch the fish. Also, the controller rumbles, if you can't see you can know by expecting that.

Detailed Fishing List

Uji River (Fushimi)

  • Crucian Carp (Triangle-shapped) small or medium size, bottom half of the screen.
  • Carp (Normal) medium size, bottom half of the screen.
  • Nishikigoi (Normal) medium size, left side of screen, a bit southwest from the middle of the screen. I've used bait, it did not appear before that.
  • Ghost Koi (Normal) medium size, throw a bait first, then check the middle of the screen (a bit north from the middle).
  • Electric Catfish (Normal) medium size, around the middle of the screen.
  • Salmon (Normal) medium size, swimming quickly across the middle area of the screen. Use bait to make it appear easier.
  • Rainbow Trout (Normal) medium size, another one swimming across the middle of the screen.
  • Softshell Turtle (Blob-shapped) small size, close to the bottom of the screen.
  • Crawfish (Blob-shapped) small size, close to the bottom of the screen.

Fishing Banks (Sea Fishing)

Both Sea Fishing Spots can be accessed by speaking with the fisherman on the dock south of Teradaya, at the southeastern part of the map.

  • Squid (Blob-shapped) large size, visible stationary around the rock in the center of the screen
  • Sea Bream: medium Triangle, swimming back and forth along the top half of the screen, throw bait.
  • Scorpionfish (Blob-shapped) large size, one of the moving ones in the lower half of the screen
  • Thread-Sail Filefish: medium Triangle, bottom half of the screen
  • Tiger Prawn (Blob-shapped) large size, lower half of the screen
  • Goby: Long, close to the rocks at the bottom of the screen
  • Common Octopus (Blob-shapped) large size, easily caught by just casting right near the rock in the middle of the screen, even with no silhouette visible
  • Porcupinefish (Blob-shapped) large size, right-top half of the screen. Can be hard to find, but if you toss a bait it can appear on the upper right side of the screen, swiming either north or south.
  • Japanese Puffer (Blob-shapped) large size, right side of the screen close to the rocks, I've found a few northeast from the middle rock.
  • Whitebait: medium Normal, swimming around the bottom half of the screen. The actual visual in the water is the same size as things like the Carp, but when caught is actually tiny

East Coast (Sea Fishing)

  • Marlin (Normal) huge size, swims back and forth right near the very top edge of the area
  • Bluefin Tuna (Normal) huge size, swimming back and forth along the top half of the screen. Use bait. There is a requirement to catch a total of 10 of these, along with a "big" variation for Diligence Record completion. A "big" tuna is one that is above an arbitrary size when it is gold rank. You need to catch a gold one, then keep catching them in that session until you get a "big" one. If you don't catch a gold one, leave the area and retry.
  • Righteye Flounder (Triangle-shapped) medium size, around the center of the screen
  • Thread-Sail Filefish (Triangle-shapped) medium size, swimming quickly around the bottom half of the screen.
  • Conger Eel (Long), stationery on the bottom half of the screen.
  • Great White Shark (Normal) huge size, swimming back and forth the entire center line on the screen. I had to toss some bait first.
  • Oarfish (Long) huge size, stationary near the top of the area. Use bait.
  • Spider Crab (Blob-shapped) large size, stationary on the bottom half of the screen.
  • Whitebait (Normal) medium size, swimming around the bottom half of the screen. It shows as regular size, but the fish is small when you catch it.

Kamo River (Mukurogai)

  • Crucian Carp (Triangle-shapped) small or medium size, bottom half of the screen.
  • Electric Catfish (Normal) medium size, around the middle of the screen.
  • Stringfish (Normal) large size, swimming back and forth along the top edge of the area. Use bait.
  • Salmon (Normal) medium size, swimming back and forth in the top half of the screen.
  • Rainbow Trout (Normal) medium size,  swimming back and forth along the bottom edge of the screen.
  • Freshwater Eel (Long), stationery in the middle of the screen.
  • Sweetfish (Normal) medium size, near the middle of the screen.
  • Crawfish (Blob-shapped) small size, bottom half of the screen.
